Erlebnis Wissenschaft

for more than a decade, from Was Biotronik alles kann (2002) to Invasion der Waschbären (2014), my books in German were published by Wiley-VCH, mostly in their general pop-science series Erlebnis Wissenschaft (not quite translatable, this suggests science is an exciting experience).

Since the publication of the raccoons’ book in 2014, I have had no luck with further proposals, and have been given to understand that the sales of the series weren’t as good as the publisher hoped. Checking up the programme this summer, I realised that the last new title was published in 2016. One that is listed in 2018 is in fact the paperback version of a book previously published in hardback. Coming from the main website, the list doesn’t even have a link, so I had to use search engines to find it here. So, reluctantly, I am having to switch back to hustle mode and try to find a new publisher.

I can accept that on a purely balance-based reckoning, the books may not have been very profitable, but then again, Wiley-VCH is a huge publisher with successful academic titles (the white and blue design inherited from the original Verlag Chemie) as well as the licence for the German version of the hugely successful “For Dummies” series, not to mention a vast array of academic journals. All of which surely could help to fund a bit of an effort to help the public understanding of science with a series of intermediate level popular science books.

Oh well. I may have written critical reviews of one or two of the titles shown below, but I surely will miss the series.




For this photo I rounded up my own titles in the series and a few from other authors. Since taking the photo I keep discovering others that I forgot (eg the biographies of Haber and Lynen and the memoir of Schatz – for the biographies alone it would be worthwhile keeping the series alive).

platypuses in translation

I'm very pleased to report that my book "The birds, the bees and the platypuses" is now available in Arabic translation thanks to the Hindawi Foundation (set up by Ahmed Hindawi), a non-profit publishing operation aiming to make the world's knowledge accessible in that language.

The steadily growing list of titles they've translated is here (in English). Details of my book are here (in Arabic). I understand the print edition costs $10, and electronic versions are also available.

This is a screenshot, as in my attempt to save the cover image from the site I lost the writing on the cover. No idea how that can happen. Also, I'm afraid the cover features an inverted helix, but I'll let this pass for once.

three cute animals

The release of my third cute-animal themed book is only four weeks away - after platypuses and geckos I now have a raccoon serving as a mascot. I've just set up a dedicated web page for the new book, which you'll find here:

why the Neanderthal genome matters

Amidst all the ado about the UK general election, few people around here will have noticed that a draft genome of our Neanderthal (or Neandertal, as they spell it in the US and in Germany) relatives was published in Science magazine on Friday, 7.5. What press coverage there was focussed on the finding that all modern non-Africans analysed in comparison have a very small number of “typical Neanderthal” genetic traits, suggesting that the small group of early humans that emigrated from Africa and then went on to populate the rest of the world must have interbred with an even smaller number of Neanderthals.

Personally, I find that specific result neither surprising nor terribly important. What I find much more exciting about this project is, firstly, the phenomenal difficulty that had to be overcome (which is why the project is discussed in the “crazy” section of my recent book, The birds, the bees, and the platypuses), and secondly, the usefulness of Neanderthals as an external reference point for genetic and biomedical studies of our own species.

To the first point, as I have both worked with DNA and dug for Neanderthal remains, I was awestruck a few years ago, when Svante Pääbo and colleagues set out to sequence a complete genome, based on a 50-microgram DNA sample from a single rotten bone (if memory serves, 50 micrograms of DNA may well be invisible to the naked eye). Apparently, they have a little more material now (seeing they report a composite genome derived from three individuals), but still. If you consider that only 10 years ago the draft sequence of Homo sapiens, a species of which we have more than 6 billion specimens walking around, required a monumental effort and astronomical cost to sequence even in a crude draft version, the success of the Neanderthal sequencing project just a decade later is just mindboggling. Especially because the risk of contamination with modern human DNA must be severely limiting the sequencing effort. Every bone fragment that any Homo sapiens has touched with their bare hands is probably a lost cause already.

Regarding the second point, we are only beginning to get an impression of the diversity of individual human genomes, but as we are accumulating more and more personal genomes and begin to draw medical conclusions from them, it is important to have an “ancient” reference for comparison, to be able to deduce which of the genetic variants is the original one and which is the mutation. To some extent, the chimpanzee genome can serve as a stop-gap in this role, but Neanderthal being so much closer to us, it is a much more useful reference point. The new research puts the parting of ways at 270,000 to 440,000 years, while chimps and humans parted company some five million years ago.

Finally, in the analysis of the few genetic variants that we non-Africans seem to have inherited from Neanderthals, there are already some interesting clues for medical research. Most intriguingly, one of the genes has been linked to autism. A few years ago, there was a short story published in Nature, exploring the possibility that we have our “nerdy” genes (an overdose of which may cause autism) from Neanderthals, which implies that Neanderthal society failed because of a lack of social instincts. This story could now turn out to be amazingly prescient.

cute platypus seduces readers

If proof were needed that cute animals on the cover help to sell books, my German title "Der Kuss des Schnabeltiers" (see this blog entry from last September's release) has achieved a respectable sales result (by my very modest standards) in its first year, doing much better than the English version, which doesn't look quite as attractive. Among my German titles, only "Exzentriker des Lebens" (Life on the Edge) had a better start.

I've updated my personal sales ranking here -- guaranteed to be the only bestsellers list my books will ever feature in!

At amazon.de, the current sales ranking is 46,150, which -- again, by my modest standards -- isn't bad. Plus, there is a very enthusiastic review by a kind reader whom I don't even know.

huffing and puffing

A third of a century ago, H. McGurk and J. W. MacDonald published a landmark paper in Nature (Hearing lips and seeing voices, vol. 264, p 746) showing that speech perception is influenced by visual impressions as well, not just by the sound.

Back in 1997, I did an opinion piece for New Scientist exploring the implications of the McGurk effect (as it became known) for the unfortunate tradition of dubbing movies and thus mismatching the auditory and visual signals. In that piece I also mentioned some of the variations on the McGurk experiment done by other researchers, some of which were quite funny, e.g. perceiving speech from inverted faces. I'm still wondering whether the subjects of the study had to stand on their heads.

Last week, Nature published another spin-off, easily summarised as "McGurk effect in air-puffs." Briefly, the authors Bryan Gick And Donald Derrick show for air flow what McGurk and MacDonald showed for vision, namely that it can distort auditory perception. For instance there is a short sharp puff of air in saying "pa", but not in "ba". The paper is on page 502, and a short interview with the first author appears on page 388.

Fortunately, though, all this doesn't affect anybody's enjoyment of movies, unlike the original McGurk effect and the dubbing industry.

Kuss des Schnabeltiers

Vorwort

Wissenschaft macht Spaß! Sieben Jahre lang habe ich als Hobbyreporter über naturwissenschaftliche Neuigkeiten berichtet, und seit Mai 2000 dann als hauptberuflicher Wissenschaftsautor. In diesen 15 Jahren haben sich Dutzende von Geschichten angesammelt, an die ich mich immer wieder gerne erinnere, weil sie mir beim Schreiben (und dem einen oder der anderen hoffentlich auch beim Lesen) so viel Freude bereitet haben.

Dies sind die Geschichten, die mich immer wieder in Versuchung führen, wenn ich sie beim Blättern in meinen Archiven sehe, sie zum x-ten Mal wieder zu lesen und damit meine Zeit zu vergeuden. Viele von diesen Geschichten habe ich mehrfach in verschiedenen Formaten und Sprachen verwendet, als Beispiele zitiert, oder an meinen Lebenslauf angehängt. Sie zeigen, zumindest meiner Ansicht nach, dass Naturwissenschaften ein Teil unserer Kultur sind, der ebenso bunt und vielfältig sein kann wie etwa Literatur oder Musik, und intellektuell ebenso bereichernd.

Was zeichnet diese meine “Lieblingsgeschichten” gegenüber den knapp 1000 anderen aus, die ich in all den Jahren verfasst habe? Ich habe drei wichtige Kriterien gefunden, von denen jede der Geschichten eines oder sogar mehrere erfüllt. In Anlehnung an den Titel eines Albums der Gruppe TLC habe ich meine Kategorien crazy, sexy, und cool genannt.

Die erste Kategorie stellt gleichzeitig den Nukleationskeim dar, um den sich dieses Buch kristallisierte. Die Idee, eine Sammlung verrückter Geschichten zusammenzustellen, trage ich schon seit etlichen Jahren mit mir herum. Die erste “verrückte” Geschichte war die mit den Kamelen, siehe Seite XXX. Unter “crazy” finden sich überraschende, außergewöhnliche, und oft ganz und gar verrückte Entdeckungen und Launen der Natur, die sich dann aber oftmals als nützlich erweisen, wie eben die verrückten Antikörper der Kamele. In dieser Abteilung finden sich auch Forschungsprojekte, die anfangs so aussichtslos erschienen, dass schon ein gewisses Maß an Verrücktheit dazugehörte, sie überhaupt erst in Angriff zu nehmen. Die Sequenzierung des Neandertaler-Genoms, beruhend auf weniger als einem Milligramm hochgradig kontaminierter DNA, zählt zweifellos dazu.

Sexy Geschichten handeln manchmal von Lust und Liebe, manchmal aber auch von anderen Obsessionen unserer Species, vom glitzernden Gold bis zum süffigen Wein. In meinem Gesamtwerk sind „menschelnde“ Geschichten eher die Ausnahme, doch aufgrund ihrer besseren Zugänglichkeit sind sie hier gleichberechtigt mit jenen über Bakterien oder Moleküle vertreten.

Coole Geschichten erzählen oft von pfiffigen Erfindungen, Werkzeugen, und Gimmicks. Viele davon wurden in den vergangenen Jahren von WissenschaftlerInnen erfunden, doch manche stammen auch aus dem Werkzeugkasten der Natur.

Beim Zusammenstellen dieser Texte ging ich jeweils von einem Manuskript für einen Zeitungs- oder Zeitschriftenbeitrag aus, überarbeitete dieses, und fügte eine Einführung hinzu, um zu erklären, was diese Geschichte interessant macht. Den älteren Texten habe ich zusätzlich auch ein Nachwort mit einer Zusammenfassung nachfolgender Entwicklungen angehängt. Innerhalb der drei Teile des Buchs sind die Kapitel grob chronologisch geordnet, so dass sie auch einen Eindruck davon vermitteln, wie sich die Wissenschaft in diesen 15 Jahren weiterentwickelt hat. Die Jahreszahl der Originalveröffentlichung ist am Ende jeder Geschichte in Klammern angegeben.

Die Mehrzahl dieser Geschichten erschien entweder in Spektrum der Wissenschaft, Nachrichten aus der Chemie, Chemie in unserer Zeit, oder Biologie in unserer Zeit. Einige lagen bisher nur in englischer Sprache vor (als Artikel in Chemistry World oder Chemistry in Britain, sowie in der englischen Fassung dieses Buchs. Zwei Geschichten sind nach der Zeitschriftenveröffentlichung auch in meinen inzwischen vergriffenen Büchern Expeditionen in den Nanokosmos bzw. Exzentriker des Lebens erschienen.

Mein Dank gilt all den Redakteurinnen und Redakteuren, die mir in all den Jahren Aufträge erteilt und meine Artikel in ihre Zeitungen und Zeitschriften aufgenommen haben. Einige von ihnen haben mit der Zeit die Fähigkeit erworben, meine Gedanken zu lesen, was meine Arbeit vereinfacht und beschleunigt. Doch auch dann, wenn sie kritische oder scheinbar dumme Fragen stellen, helfen sie mir, meine Begeisterung mit den LeserInnen zu teilen.

Fünfzehn Jahre sind eine außerordentlich lange Zeit in der modernen Wissenschaft – das fiel mir besonders auf, als ich die Artikel aus den 1990er Jahren überarbeitete. Einige von diesen muteten bereits historisch an, Erinnerungen an die längst verflossene Vor-Genom-Zeit, als man mit Untersuchungen an einzelnen Genen oder einzelnen Proteinen noch Lorbeeren erringen konnte. Einige der Themen, die ich damals spannend fand scheinen aus der Mode gekommen zu sein, während andere geradezu spektakulär erblüht sind und teilweise bereits nützliche Früchte tragen. Einige der erwähnten ForscherInnen haben inzwischen einen Nobelpreis erhalten, andere scheinen vom Radar verschwunden zu sein. So ist das Leben, auch in der Wissenschaft.

Vor allem aber hoffe ich, dass die ausgewählten Geschichten einen Eindruck von der Lebendigkeit der Wissenschaft der letzten eineinhalb Jahrzehnte vermitteln und dabei deutlich machen, dass jede Frage, welche die Forschung beantwortet, gleich mehrere neue, ebenso spannende Fragen aufwirft, und damit für einen unendlichen Strom von verrückten, sexy, und coolen Entdeckungen sorgt.

aptamers guide chemotherapy

Aptamers are single-stranded DNA (or RNA) molecules selected from millions of possible sequences for their aptitude to bind a specific target. Developed originally as an alternative to antibodies for biotech applications, they have recently found application in sensors and in the treatment of age-related macular degeneration.

Researchers have now very cleverly combined liposome packaging and aptamer targeting to direct chemotherapy (e.g. cisplatin) to tumour cells (e.g. breast cancer). All the known advantages of DNA aptamers apply (non immunogenic, easier to produce and handle than antibodies), and on top of that one gets the chance to call back the attack if it goes wrong, by injecting antisense DNA.

platypuses reviewed

There is a new review (in German) of my book The birds, the bees, and the platypuses, in Treffpunkt Buch Plus, a shared review supplement that appears with the entire family of "in unserer Zeit" magazine, i.e. Chemie in unserer Zeit, Biologie iuZ, Physik iuZ, etc. While each of the magazines has a very modest print run, I reckon the sum total should be quite reasonable, somewhere between Spektrum der Wissenschaft and New Scientist. The review appers on page IV.

Talking about platypuses, the German version of the book, Der Kuss des Schnabeltiers, is on track for publication in September. We have a lovely cover design which I'll put online as soon as I get a jpg file.

space bears

A year ago, researchers sent two species of tardigrades (microscopic animals also known as water-bears) into a low Earth orbit, around 280 km above sea level for 10 days, to see how they cope. Tardigrades are remarkable for their resistance to extreme desiccation, so the idea is that they might be the only animals capable of surviving the high vacuum in space.

Now Ingemar Jönsson et al. from Kristianstad University in Sweden have reported the results of this space mission. It turns out that both species cope with space vacuum very well as long as they are protected from radiation, with survival rates close to 100 %. One species (M.tardigradum) also had a reasonable survival rate after exposure to space vacuum and UV radiation in the UVA and UVB range. Only three specimens of M. tardigradum survived the full unfiltered radiation spectrum typical of Earth orbit.

Tardigrades have now joined bacterial spores and lichens in the very small group of organisms that can survive space conditions. Mechanisms remain to be elucidated, but one may speculate that sophisticated ways of DNA packaging during desiccation and DNA repair afterwards play a role, as has been shown for the radiation resistance of Deinococcus radiodurans.

Squeezy little bears

The crazy creatures at the extreme ends of life on Earth have fascinated me for many years. As both my PhD thesis and one of my books dealt with life under extreme conditions, I’m no longer that easily impressed by tales of life in boiling water, sizzling deserts, or permanent ice. However, the following story (which unfortunately came up too late for the original edition of “Life on the Edge”) beats them all. If anybody wants to send animals to Mars, I suggest they try the “little bears” or tardigrades. The following text is adapted from a postscript included in the paperback edition of “Life on the Edge.”


Tardigrades are microscopically small animals reminiscent of downsized bears, at most half a millimetre long. They live in water droplets suspended in moss and lichens and can be found on all continents. Now if you’re such a tiny little bear exposed to the elements, you need some very special survivial skills.

Tardigrades have at least two major emergency routines. If their habitat is flooded and there is a risk of oxygen shortage, they inflate to a balloon-like passive state that can float around on the water for days. If, however, the threat comes from a lack of water, they shrink to form the so-called tun state (because it looks like a barrel), which could be described as the animal equivalent of a spore. Researchers have managed to resuscitate tardigrades by rehydrating moss samples after up to 100 years of storage on museum shelves, which proves the quite remarkable long-term stability of this state.

It was this tun state that Kunihiro Seki and Masato Toyoshima (Kanagawa University, Japan) used in their studies of resistance against high pressures. As the presence of water would have converted the animals back to the active state, the researchers suspended the tuns in a perfluorocarbon solvent before they applied pressures of up to 6,000 atmospheres (more than five-fold the pressure found in the deepest trenches of the oceans). While active tardigrade populations in water are are killed off by 2000 atmospheres (already an implausibly high threshold for an animal), the tun state allowed 95 % of the individuals of one species and 80 % of another to survive the maximal pressure of 6,000 atmospheres.

This observation is unprecedented for any animal species. Only some bacterial spores and lichens could hope to compete with that. Still, tardigrade experts may have been only mildly surprised, as they knew already that the tuns can be revived after freezing in liquid helium -- they are frost resistant down to 0.5 Kelvin. Detailed mechanistic explanations for these record-breaking achievements are not yet available. One thing that is known for sure is that the tuns contain high concentrations of the sugar trehalose, which is known to improve the stress resistance of baker’s yeast.

The phenomenal shelf life of the tuns has aroused the interest of researchers in medical technology. Some are trying to copy the tardigrades’ recipe to achieve similar long-term stability for human organs to be used in transplantation.

What happened next

I am pleased to report that researchers actually followed up on my suggestion and sent tardigrades to space. The TARDIS (Tardigrades in Space) experiment was part of the FOTON M-3 mission, that launched on 14 September 2007 and returned safely on the 26th, after 189 orbits. At the time of writing, the tardigrade passengers were awaiting detailed analyses that will surely reveal how well they are suited to withstand space conditions.
