I was planning to do a post on the 50th birthday of my globe a couple of years ago, but didn't quite get round to it, so here comes in time for its 52nd birthday, a view of the Earth as it looked in 1974:
The globe has served me well this half century, keeping me aware of the fact that the Earth is round and that Greenland is in fact smaller than South America, and Africa is huge. Which is more than can be said about all those maps needlessly based on the Mercator projection that we see just about everywhere (not Mercator's fault but due to the map apps). I'm not starting another rant about this, but it was a relief to hear earlier this year that the UN has recognised the problem too.
The globe is still with me, in this room actually as I write this, and I took a photo of it a while ago - STOP PRESS: I found it, it's even on flickr:
If I ever wanted to upgrade to a handpainted model, I'd visit Bellerby & Co Globemakers at London. I used to follow them on tumblr back in the 2010s but they haven't posted there since 2021.
PS: the every picture series has been on hiatus this year, might bring it back next year.
